Dear YOUR MP’S NAME

I am writing to you as a constituent ahead of Labour Party conference.

I’d like to ask you to use your platform as a Labour MP to speak up for the government’s climate and net zero agenda at this year’s conference.

I am pleased that Labour has begun implementing the climate policies set out in 2024’s election manifesto. But did you know that while Labour has taken steps towards 15 of the 25 climate policies in the manifesto, six of them have yet to be implemented, while there has been a partial rollback on four? For example, instead of restoring the 2030 phase-out date for cars with internal combustion engines, Labour has backtracked, limiting the 2030 date to non-hybrid petrol and diesel cars. And despite Labour’s high-profile pledge to ban new North Sea oil and gas exploration, the government has yet to enact this in law. You can read more in this analysis from VoteClimate UK: https://voteclimate.uk/news/labour_year_1_review.htm

I am also concerned by reports that Labour may be planning to reverse parts of its net zero agenda due to Reform UK’s performance in the polls and a concerted campaign against Ed Miliband in some sections of the media: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx20znjejw1o

Did you know that, far from supporting the global journey towards net zero, Labour’s 2024 climate commitments will take the UK beyond its carbon budget around 2033? This carbon budget is the UK’s share of the global carbon budget needed to limit temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, as calculated by scientists. Far from stalling or reversing its climate agenda, the government must therefore take far more ambitious climate action if the UK is to do its bit to ensure a liveable planet.

Polling consistently shows that a higher proportion of voters think the government should be doing more to reduce emissions than think the government is doing too much. When asked by YouGov on 1st September 2025 ‘How is the UK government handling climate change?’, 37% of voters answered ‘Are NOT doing or spending enough to try and reduce carbon emissions’, while only 28% said the government was doing and spending too much. Of Labour voters, 48% said the government are NOT doing or spending enough, and only 12% said the government are doing and spending too much: https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/trackers/how-is-the-uk-government-handling-climate-change?crossBreak=labour

Over 7,500 people in constituencies across the UK have signed VoteClimate UK’s pledge to make climate the decisive issue in who they vote for in future elections. This number is expected to increase dramatically ahead of the next general election, which could be decided on a knife-edge. VoteClimate will recommend to all its members who the best vote for climate is in their constituency – and that will depend on Labour’s record in government as well as its next election manifesto.

At this year’s conference, I would like you to:

  • Use your platform as a Labour MP to tell the Prime Minister and his cabinet that many voters support more action to reduce emissions, and remind the government that additional climate action is very popular with Labour voters in particular.
  • Publicly support Ed Miliband’s net zero agenda, and urge his department to go further.
  • Use any conference speeches or conference fringe appearances you make to speak up for further emissions reductions.
  • Support any conference motions aimed at further reducing emissions.

Many thanks for your time.

Regards
