Finally: crisis support. This year the Edinburgh book festival, the world’s biggest book festival, lost its funding from Baillie Gifford, the investment firm, after a campaign by Fossil Free Books. I do not wish to rehash that affair here, save to say that although I fully support tackling climate change, I am unconvinced that defunding a book festival is the way to go about it. Is there something we can learn from that episode? In this country, the cultural sector depends on philanthropy as well as public investment. Is there a way that DCMS can help book festivals, or indeed any festival, navigate the controversies that can abruptly arise in the social media age? I know that the new Government are fully committed to seeing the cultural and creative sectors thrive, so I would be grateful if they could undertake to give these issues some consideration.

We are so behind as a country in Scotland on tackling climate change. First the SNP ditched the climate targets. Yesterday Scotland missed its greenhouse gas target. Today this: ???????? Climate change is on the ballot paper in this election. Vote Labour on July 4th ????????????????????????????????????️ https://twitter.com/mmgeissler/status/1803782103663833229 [Source]

Wonderful to have @elliereeves in Edinburgh today after the launch of our amazing Scottish manifesto. Great to chat to people about our plans to stabilise the economy, sort NHS waiting times, and tackle the climate crisis. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1803076028186657067/photo/1 [Source]

Great to have @IanMurrayMP (the other Edinburgh Labour Murray!) on Porty prom today talking about the climate crisis, the problem of sewage in our waters, as well as the opportunities a Labour government could bring to this community. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1802435366248718521/video/1 [Source]

The SNP simply aren’t serious about our climate responsibilities. First they ditch targets, then they oppose a windfall tax on oil and gas, now this. Only Labour has a credible plan for action, lower bills and reaching net zero. If you care about the climate, vote Labour ???????????????????????????????? https://twitter.com/bbcquestiontime/status/1801342343527682402 [Source]

This election is a climate change election. Great to have support of Green icon Robin Harper. If elected, I promise to be a strong voice for climate issues in parliament - it’s an issue I care passionately about. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1800875367210868914/video/1 [Source]

The climate crisis is on the ballot paper in July. It is an honour to have the support of Robin Harper, Scotland’s first Green MSP. Tackling climate change is one of my passions, and something I would work on every day if elected as your MP. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1800802633688707083/photo/1 [Source]

Labour is offering action on climate change, energy security and lower fuel bills. Under the Tories we have a cost of living crisis, and the SNP have scrapped our climate targets. ????????????????????????????????????️Vote Labour on July 4????????????????????????????????????️ https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1798099142889349175/photo/1 [Source]

Great to be out chatting to people near the Meadows today - and the Meadows were looking great! Lots of people saying we just need to stop the chaos and get back to the real issues, like climate change and the economy. I agree! https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1787546586194854039/photo/1 [Source]

The first step is getting a government in Downing Street that’s serious about this. I urge everyone in this constituency who cares about the climate crisis to back Labour, so we can get started on tackling it. [Source]

I know the political drama is attention-grabbing, but we shouldn’t forget what triggered this: Scotland ditching its climate targets. Despite the political circus, the climate is still in crisis. We still need concrete, effective, achievable policy to decarbonise the economy. https://twitter.com/BBCScotlandNews/status/1783446415819018392 [Source]

Great to be out chatting to people in Meadowbank today. Like me, many people are angry about the Scottish Government ditching our climate targets. Climate change is the most pressing issue facing the planet - we need serious, realistic, achievable policy to get to net zero. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1782482779235557852/photo/1 [Source]

Back to Craigentinny this afternoon for some excellent conversations. People are looking for a government with a serious plan to fix things: fix the economy, fix the NHS, fix the lack of progress on net zero. Only @ScottishLabour is offering that. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1781371882610081975/photo/1 [Source]

2023: Warmest year on record 2024: SNP-Green government ditches climate targets Truly an awful decision. We only get one chance to save the planet. Scotland needs a progressive government that will prioritise the climate. https://twitter.com/BBCScotlandNews/status/1780655361709511096 [Source]

We don’t need missed targets and opposition to a windfall tax on oil and gas. We need bold action. Only Labour is offering *action* on climate change at the next election. https://twitter.com/ScottishLabour/status/1773056980279537870 [Source]

Great to have @peterkyle campaigning in Southside - despite the pouring rain!! Thanks to everyone who chatted to us - interesting discussions about climate change, cost of living and Labour’s plans for government. This is incredibly serious and should be a wake up call to us all. Words, strategies and slogans do not reduce emissions. It will be hard, but it CAN be done. Real action is needed. Scotland needs a government serious about tackling climate change. https://twitter.com/theCCCuk/status/1770239205488164932 [Source]

Fantastic to have such a great team out campaigning around Portobello yesterday. This isn’t even the whole team! People are worried about the cost of living, the NHS and climate change. Our experience matches the polls - people are looking to @ScottishLabour to bring change! https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1751588022036963675/photo/1 [Source]

I go doorknocking every week in Ash Regan’s constituency and ask people what their priorities are. People say the cost of living, NHS waiting times, the climate crisis… No-one ever mentions this. https://twitter.com/AshReganALBA/status/1742559061734793501 [Source]

Great gang out talking to people in Portobello. Lots of people who used to vote SNP or Green now realise that Labour is the best way to get the Tories out, and get a government that will tackle climate change and the cost of living. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1736008704305009147/photo/1 [Source]

Interesting to listen to local people’s concerns at the Musselburgh Flood Scheme public meeting this morning. Climate change is real and we must protect ourselves. As we do, it’s important local people are heard and public money effectively spent. I will continue to follow up. https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1728364444756136299/photo/1 [Source]

Met with the team behind the Musselburgh Flood Scheme to put some of my questions to them last night. Climate change is real and we have to be realistic about its impact. But we need solutions that work for the local community - and the public purse. I will be following up! https://twitter.com/ChrisMurray2010/status/1723033175671132533/photo/1 [Source]
