In Calder Valley this weekend we saw the very real face of climate change, nearly having serious floods. The opposition act like it's an inconvenience, not a threat to our communities. I asked @Ed_Miliband about warm homes following his statement on COP this week https://x.com/JoshFG/status/1861823889686306855/video/1 [Source]

The towns of Calder Valley run along the River Calder. That river has brought beauty, and supported the textile trade that once made our community world-famous, but it also brought the floods that hit our community particularly hard in 2012, 2015 and 2020—a visible sign of the impact of climate change, which will define many of our coming years. However, the towns have been able to rebuild, relying on an incredible community spirit and a way of being with the world that Chris McCafferty, Calder Valley’s MP from 1997 to 2010, described in her maiden speech as

Calderdale’s climate action plan has been passed by cabinet. It’s ambitious & commits us to net 0 by 2038 with interim targets by 2030. The rain & flood alerts this week was a painful reminder we are on the front line of the climate emergency, I’m proud we’re active in response. https://twitter.com/JoshFG/status/1734242958323413200/photo/1 [Source]

@aidanskinner I know. A few years ago the Lib Dem’s outflanked us on some climate emergency stuff because they wanted a fixed date for net 0 and we took the estimation that without clear government action on decommissioning drax we couldn’t with integrity claim our power would be renewable [Source]

  • 01 Nov 2021: Tweet

@JustineBrian What worries me about your framing here is that you focus on the impact of net zero as if the counter point is everything carrying on as it is. That simply isn’t the case. It’s addressing the issue or catastrophic global climate change. [Source]

This kind of journalism is so frustrating. We accept that the scale of climate change means government not individual action is key to solving climate change, so why are we clutching pearls at how leaders travel to COP. @GNDRising Rather than ask him to formulate policies for government your shibboleth is that he sign up to a bill that won’t pass? This isn’t smart campaigning. It is absolutely vital we face up to climate change. He’s engaged with a ‘just transition’ which tories won’t touch. Wrong target [Source]

@cllrawilkinson @susanp_80 I think we need a just transition. On climate on nuclear. People need jobs and both those industries offer well paid skilled and sustainable jibs in remote areas. It’s not beyond our ken as a labour movement to fix this, but we must be clear what we are transitioning to. [Source]
